Broadcasters are the first component of PSL’s business model. They are responsible for broadcasting the league on television and digitally. The PSL is broadcasted on various TV channels, which pay the PCB for the broadcasting rights.

The broadcasting rights for the PSL have been sold for a huge amount of 6.3 billion PKR. This is 2 billion PKR more than the previous deal.

PSL is now the 3rd most valuable league in terms of media rights. PSL TV and Live Streaming rights sold for combined sum of 8.2 Billion PKR (approximately 29.60 million USD) for a period of two years (2024-25). Only behind IPL and WPL, surpassing ILT20 and SA20,whose media rights are approximately worth USD12 M and USD 10M per year.

A sports bagged the TV rights for 6.3 billion PKR. While Walee Technologies got the digital rights for 1.9 billion PKR.

The PCB had a company called “Colganbauer” who evaluate the media rights of PSL before the bidding, and they determined a value of 6 billion PKR.

The title sponsorship, which has belonged to HBL since the beginning of the tournament, was sold to them again until 2025 for nearly $22.5 million (PKR 635 million). This is only the title sponsorship, which means the revenue from other sponsors has not been factored in.)
The second component of PSL’s business model is sponsors. There are two types of sponsors: title sponsors and official sponsors. Title sponsors pay a considerable amount of money to have their name attached to the league’s name. For example, the HBL PSL, where HBL is the title sponsor.
Pakistan Super League has received a major boost from HBL who have reacquired the title sponsorship of the PCB’s pinnacle tournament for another four-year cycle (2022-2025).
HBL not only exceeded the reserve price in reacquiring the rights but sealed it with a 55 percent jump from the last cycle, which speaks volumes of their belief in the PSL brand.

Official sponsors pay the PCB to have their brand promoted in various ways, such as on billboards and stickers around the ground, and through promotions during the matches. For example, the “Golootlo Catch of the Match” is an official sponsor. In addition, the PCB earns revenue from advertisements during matches. For the 2023 PSL matches, a 10-second ad will cost 1.5 million Pakistani rupees (approximately 15 lakh Pakistani rupees).

3. Franchise Fee

How much PCB earn from Franchise Fee from PSL  ?

Before 1st edition of PSL, PCB sold the rights to five franchise teams that would play the tournament for $93 million for a 10-year period. The most expensive team to be sold was Karachi Kings for $26 million, followed by Lahore Qalandars for $25 million, Peshawar Zalmi for $16 million, Islamabad United for $15 million, and the Quetta Gladiators for $11 million. Since the teams were sold for a 10-year period, the total cost was payable over 10 years in the form of a yearly franchise fee equivalent to 10% of the team’s value. Essentially, each franchise owner would rent out the use of the franchise for the year for a fixed price.

The reason Karachi and Lahore were more expensive while Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta were cheaper in comparison was because of the sizes of the cities. The idea was that each team would be able to become a ‘brand’ of the corresponding city. On top of this, there was the understanding that eventually each franchise would have financial control corresponding to their respective city as well — which is a common practice in most franchise sports.
Team ownership is not cheap. In 2018, the Multan Sultans were sold for 42.6 million dollars (approximately Pakistani 1100 crore rupees). Team owners also earn revenue from merchandise sales, ticket sales, and sponsorships.

The revenue is earned from broadcasting, title sponsorship, gate money and other rights.
