Meanwhile, talking about his background, the 20-year-old said: “I am a native of Matta Swat, played all my cricket there, and then gave trials in Mardan. In the beginning, when I was not elected, and I continued my hard work.”

In 2017, he played in PCB’s Under-16 tournament representing FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Area) and was the second-leading wicket-taker for the region with 12 scalps. He was selected to play in PCB’s U-16 Pentangular T20 Tournament in 2018 but soon fell off the radar. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) picked him to play three-day cricket in 2021.

Ihsanullah was first discovered by Lahore Qalandars

Ihsanullah was called up by Rashid Latif in Islamabad for trials. He was enrolled in the Kamyab Jawan Sports Drive, a talent program by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in collaboration with Lahore Qalandars’ player development program (PDP). He was recommended to three PSL franchises – Qalandars, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans – and Multan managed to get him registered in the PSL 7 draft.

Multan Sultans picked Ihsanullah in the supplementary category half-heartedly as their last pick in the PSL 7 just to have a backup fast bowler on the bench and now the rest is history.

Ihsanullah PSL 7 Career

He was first picked by Multan Sultans in the supplement category as the last pick in PSL 7. He made his debut in PSL 7 against Karachi Kings and bowled only one over and gave only 3 runs. He played his second PSL match against Lahore Qalandars. In this match, he bowled 2.2 overs and gave 20 runs and got one wicket with an economy of 8.60. He got injured in this game and was never able to complete his full quota of overs. He was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament last year.

Ihsanullah performance in Domestic Season 2021

He finished his rehabilitation and recovered ahead of the domestic season with KP under head coach Abdur Rehman (also an assistant coach at  Multan Sultans). He played seven first-class matches, the National T20 Cup and the Pakistan one-day Cup – where he become the second-leading wicket-taker with 25 dismissals at an average of 19.96 and a strike rate of 18.2. An improved Ihsan managed to hit the form right in time before the PSL.

Before PSL 8, Ihsanullah just bowled 20 deliveries in the PSL. Multan Sultans put faith in him. He was among eight players retained by Multan Sultans in PSL 8 as their core players. He was retained in the emerging category along with Abbas Afridi for PSL 2023.

Abul Razzaq comments on Ihsanullah

“When New Zealand came here, we selected him for the test team. I had seen him in the National T20 cup and he impressed me. If we work on him and he works on his fitness. I am sure he can touch the 160kph mark”. Razzaq said on a local TV channel.

“We have to look after such bowlers, and that’s the responsibility of PCB. We have to give chances to those who perform in the PSL”, he added.

The lanky pacer was breathing fire from his first over against Quetta Gladiators as he removed Sarfaraz Ahmed with a delivery over 152.65kph.
Ihsanullah delivered the best spell of PSL and took 5 wickets by giving just 12 runs. Ihsanullah also delivered the fastest spell in PSL history with an average speed of 144.37 kph and one delivery going over 150 kph. The previous best was of Haris Rauf’s spell against Peshawar Zalmi during the 2022 PSL. Hairs Rauf average speed was 144.16 kph.

Multan Sultans’ rising star Ihsanullah has said that he aims to become the top bowler of the ongoing eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 2023.

In an interview with Geo. tv, Ihsanullah said: “My target is to become the top bowler of PSL. I want to make Multan Sultan’s champions, and we will definitely win the trophy.”

“If God wills, I will represent Pakistan. I am working hard and the rest is up to the coaches.”

The pacer is currently the highest wicket-taker of the PSL 8, claiming 12 wickets in four matches.

Asked about his favorite wicket so far in the tournament, he said: “I have two. One is Jason Roy’s and the other one is Babar bhai’s [Babar Azam]. As you know Babar is the number one batter in the world, so taking his wickets makes you happy.”

The pacer, who hails from Swat, also shed light on his performance thus far, claiming that he had worked hard before the event and it’s now paying off.

“I have worked hard before PSL. After the Pakistan CUP, I went home for just one day. After that, I came to Lahore and trained at the Paklions International Academy. I also spent 10 days at the National High-Performance Centre in Lahore. My hard work has paid off and now I am the top bowler in PSL. Before PSL I expected that I would give a good performance for my team,” he said.

Ihsanullah named Player of the Tournment in PSL 2023

Multan Sultans’ fast bowler Ihsanullah, an emerging player, bagged the player-of-the-tournament award in Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 8 by an independent panel that was headed by Mr. Haroon Rashid (Chair of HBL PSL 8 Technical Committee) with respected commentators Bazid Khan, Daren Ganga, Nick Knight and Sana Mir as members.

Ihsanullah, who bagged the second-highest 22 wickets in the tournament with an economy rate of 7.59, has been named as the player of the tournament for his impactful performances.

The right-arm pacer is the first emerging player to be declared player of the tournament.

By virtue of these consistent performances that also earned him his maiden call-up to the Pakistan side for the Afghanistan T20Is to be played in March 2023 after the end of PSL 8.

Ihsanullah, who impressed everyone with his extra pace and deadly bouncers during the recently-concluded PSL, was picked by Oval Invincibles in the £40,000 category.

A total of four players from Pakistan picked that are Ihsanullah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Harif Rauf and Shadab Khan.

Ihsanullah Sustained an injury during an ODI against New Zealand in April,2023. Ihsanullah suffered an elbow injury.

PCB shared that the lanky fast bowler underwent  surgery in the first week of September and was placed an elbow brace for four weeks. A doctor and a physio attending him on a daily basis.

Ihsanullah had to undergo surgery in a private hospital in Lahore. A  doctor was flown in from England to operate Ihsanullah PCB stated.

His condition is now satisfactory and the brace will be removed at the end of fifth week. Afterwards, he will proceed with rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Ihsanullah is on road to recovery after spending 11 weeks in a post-operative care after suffering an elbow injury. Doctors are confident that Ihsanullah will be able to begin functional training after the completion of the 16th week of his recovery.

Multan Sultans Retained Ihsanullah in Silver Category for PSL 9

Multan Sultans appointed Ihsanullah as “Brand Ambassador” in silver category and also retained him for PSL 9. But due to not recovered from injury, Ihsanullah did not play in the PSL 9. Now he is under treatement by medical panel financially assisted by Multan Sultans Franchise.

Latest updates on Ihsanullah Injury

Unfortunately, incorrect diagnosis and a failed surgery in Lahore have prolonged his recovery. PCB officials, including a senior doctor, initially misdiagnosed him, wasting time on rehabilitation. Subsequently, a botched surgery led to the realization that he needed specialized treatment in the UK, funded by his PSL team, Multan Sultans.

Current PCB Chariman Mohsin Naqvi is displeased with the PCB’s handling of the situation and may take action against those responsible.

“Mohsin Naqvi is very upset after this incident came out in the open and he came to know about it. Chances are that some of the officials responsible for supervising Ehsan’s treatment will find themselves out of jobs very soon,” a source close to PCB was quoted as saying by The Press Trust of India (PTI).

Sultans’ owner Ali Tareen has revealed that all expenses for Ihsanullah’s treatment abroad, as well as his living expenses, have been covered by Multan Sultans. The team also provided accommodations for Ihsanullah and his family during his rehabilitation period in Lahore.

“While Ihsan was doing rehab in NCA Lahore, he was staying in an apartment with his family. All rent and living expenses were paid by MS. We retained him in the PSL even though he was injured so he could spend time with our Physios and S&C. We are flying him to England this month to be assessed by a world-renowned surgeon. Ihsan is currently back home in Swat because he wanted to spend time with his family before the upcoming UK trip,” Tareen wrote on X.

Despite the setbacks, Tareen expressed gratitude that the PCB has granted permission for Ihsanullah to seek further consultation with a renowned surgeon in the UK.

“He was initially misdiagnosed. Then the surgery wasn’t successful. But atleast the PCB agreed to allow us to get him assessed by an expert in the UK and helped get the visa. Let’s see what the surgeon says,” Tareen wrote.
