When Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium Pune was built?

This ground was inaugurated on the 1st April, 2012. The stadium was designed by British architecture company, Hopkins Architects. Its original completion date was November 2010 at a cost of Rs 1.50 billion, covering and area of 35 acres (140,000 m2). However, the stadium was ready by 2012. As a result, the stadium was not able to host ICC Cricket World Cup matches as originally intended.

The most important feature of this stadium is the rainwater drainage system. Often, matches are abandoned due to heavy downpour. To overcome this problem, MCA opted for sand-based outfield developed departmentally with technical assistance from STRI Limited, UK. Due to this technology, even during heavy showers, water on the outfield drained out fast making it ready for play again just in few minutes.

Kartik Pillay, who has been part of selection matches for the Ranji Trophy and a bowling camp for the IPL, commented, “The matches here would be high-scoring because the MCA stadium is known for its flat pitches, and the boundaries are not significantly large.”

Kshitiz Kabir, another player who has participated in selection matches for the Ranji Trophy, concurs with Kartik’s assessment. “While there might be some assistance for spinners due to the presence of dry grass and spongy bounce, the track is tailor-made for batsmen, and all the matches are likely to witness high scores. Pitch report on India Vs Bangladesh ODI World Cup, 2023 match

Pitch Report | Sanjay Manjrekar and Irfan Pathan: “It’s a good pitch, has a history of lot of runs. It’s a pitch where the seamers wouldn’t mind bowling first up or maybe under lights as well. I don’t see a turner. Definition of true pitch – you can bat really well, if you are a quality fast bowler, you get something out of it as well. It’s a black soil pitch, there’s grass covering which is not green. It’ll hold the pitch nicely. High-scoring pitch for sure. I’ll use the bouncer very regularly on this pitch. You can plays shots on the up. If anyone will get turn, it’s Kuldeep Yadav.”

The par score will be around 285. In the last match on this ground, India defeated Bangladesh by chasing a target of 257 in 41.3 overs. Both spinners and pacers picked wickets in that match.

The MCA Stadium has hosted 8 ODIs so far in which 4 teams have won batting first and 4 were won by the chasing teams.
