Big Blow for Melbourne Renegades with Molineux sidelined for WBBL 2023
Sophie Molineux will miss the entire Weber WBBL|09 season as she continues her recovery from a torn ACL in a major blow for Melbourne Renegades.
Molineux ruptured her ACL last November in WBBL|08 while bowling against Melbourne Stars and remains on the sidelines, with the left-arm spinner now hoping to make her return in the back half of the domestic summer.
It leaves the Renegades searching for a stand-in captain for their upcoming campaign, and for a second local replacement player with fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck also ruled out of the entire season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
“I’m really disappointed that my ongoing recovery from an ACL reconstruction means that I won’t be fit and available in time for this season,” Molineux said in a statement.
“But I’m very much appreciative of the support the club has shown me during the process and I’m very keen to repay their support by helping the team in any way possible over the coming months.”
The Renegades will confirm a stand-in captain ahead of their first WBBL|09 match against Brisbane Heat at Junction Oval next Friday.
Candidates include India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the in-form West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, Welsh Fire captain Tammy Beaumont.

Melbourne Renegades Women Squad Analysis for WBBL 2023-24
Melbourne Renegades was the most bottom line team in the WBBL|8. This time Melbourne Renegades picked Indian Women team captain Harman Preet Kaur and also retained West Indian all rounder Hayley Matthews. Both are all rounders hence their focus is on overseas all rounders. Melbourne Renegades batting is the most flop affair in the WBBL|8. This time Melbourne Renegades has Hayley Matthews, Tammy Beaumont can single handedly win matches and can score big runs. These are two X factor players in Melbourne Renegades batting this time. Harman Preet Kaur is also their trump card in both batting and bowling. Team is balanced one as compared to previous season. Hope some insane innings from Hayley Matthews, Tammy Beaumont and Harman Preet Kaur.
Also Melbourne Renegades has two settled local batters with likes of Dooley and Webb who already performed in the previous WBBL 8.
Bowling too is very settled and balanced one. Melbourne Renegades has Hayward as spinner who bowl in power play and she is wicket taking and economical.
Hayley Mathews also bowl in power play and she too is economical spinner who bowl wicket to wicket tight lines.
Georgia Wareham is a great experienced all round spinner and economical with ability to take wickets. Harmanpreet Kaur another spin option also economical and wicket taker.
Sarah Coyte is among few fast bowler they have who also bowl with low paced and slower ones.
This time team is settled one with inclusion of world class Beaumont, Harmanpreet Kaur and Hayley Mathews.
All three are their trump cards.
Batting is weak if Beaumont, Hayley Mathews not perform. Batting is fragile. I personally don’t like batting of Kaur as she paly with low strike rate.
Other local batters are not world class batters who can rebuild the innings if top overseas order has early blows.
But the team will compete if team combination click and players properly execute their skills.
