Who is Nikhil Chaudhary Hobart Hurricanes new signing?

Nikhil Chaudhary is and Indian born cricketer who represented India U19.Initially aspiring to be a fast bowler, he later shifted to offspin and ultimately to legspin, while also developing as an aggressive batsman.

Nikhil Chaudhary is currently playing in the Austrlian Big Bash League 2023-24.He is only the second India-born cricketer to play in the BBL, following Unmukt Chand.

Disenchanted with the corruption of the cricket system in India, Chaudhary left the country three years ago to pursue his career in Australia.

After moving to Australia, Chaudhary played grade cricket in Brisbane, from where he was scouted by the Hobart Hurricanes.

He has reportedly done extremely well in grade cricket, which led to his being picked for the Hobart-based franchise.

Nikhil Chaudhary is a run scoring machine, and Hurricanes fans will soon become familiar with his trademark big hitting as the season kicks off.

Hobart Hurricanes signed Indian born Nikhil Chaudhary for WBBL 2023-24

Looking to establish himself within the squad, Chaudhary spoke of how thrilled he is to be a part of the Big Bash and playing for the Hurricanes.

“My first goal when I moved to Australia was to be playing in the Big Bash,” explained Chaudhary.

“I would describe myself as a finisher, I’ll be there at the end in the last couple of overs scoring a couple of big ones and finishing the game for the team that will be my goal for this year.”

Cricket Tasmania High Performance General Manager, Salliann Beams discussed how Hurricanes Assistant Coach, James Hopes, put Chaudhary’s name into the mix for the Hurricanes team.

“Hopesy put Nikhil’s name forward earlier in the year, and ever since then he hasn’t stopped scoring runs, Nikhil has always batted 5, 6, 7 and he knows it so well… hopefully he’ll get his chance.”

Nikhil Chaudhary Early Cricketing Career 

By the time he rose through the ranks in 2017 and into Indian domestic cricket, Chaudhary was a batting allrounder – a medium pacer before eventually turning to legspin – as he walked into a Punjab team captained by former India spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Strongly built with a creative but calm approach at the crease, Chaudhary’s game naturally gravitated towards T20 cricket. And at Punjab, he was something like a sponge being under the tutelage of former India allrounder Yuvraj Singh.

“I learned a lot of things from him, like how to build an innings, tackle big targets and how to go deep into the innings,” Chaudhary said of Yuvraj. “I knew my capability of scoring runs at any stage of the game. I really wanted to crack the IPL and also play for India.”

Nikhil Chaudhary played along side Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Shubman Gill in his domestic 50 over debut with Punjab team in India.

In late 2019, Chaudhary twice trialled with Mumbai Indians. Shortly afterwards, he went on a holiday to Australia but remained focused on furthering his cricket career in India.

Everything changed when Australia’s borders shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Chaudhary found himself stuck in Brisbane. When restrictions eased, he immersed himself in the community and unexpectedly found a new home. “It was totally different to India and I like the culture here,” he said. “I wanted to pursue my cricket in Australia. I just wanted a change and to grow as a person.”

Nikhil Chaudhary also worked in a Mexican resturant to earn his livinng besides playing club cricket in Australia. He was not good at that job and even cut his index finger.

Then he started doing a courier job for Australia Post for the last two years but he quit that job when he got the Hobart Hurricanes contract.

Chaudhary’s BBL opportunity came after a recommendation from his Northern Suburbs coach James Hopes who is on the coaching staff at Hurricanes.

Chaudhary, however, faced a tough task cracking into a powerful Hurricanes batting line-up packed with players mostly free of international commitments. But his explosiveness and flexibility with both bat and ball greatly intrigued the Hurricanes hierarchy.

“You’re one of those players who can bat and bowl anywhere. So just be ready,” coach Jeff Vaughan told Chaudhary ahead of the season.

Nikhil Chaudhary made his Twenty20 debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament on 29 January 2017.

Nikhil Chaudhary is former U19 National representative for India, Chaudhary now resides in Queensland, and has dominated their domestic T20 competition for the past few seasons averaging 44.8 with the bat at a strike rate of 164.3.
