Who is Saud Shakeel?

The bearded Saud Shakeel a Karachi boy who broke through in the Under-19 ranks in the 2014 Youth World Cup and now being hailed as the next big thing in Pakistan cricket in Tests and ODIs.
Saud Shakeel has been known for his elegant batting style and ability to anchor an innings. He has displayed good technique and the temperament to build long innings. He made his international debut for the Pakistan cricket team in July 2021.

Pakistan’s team found a star for their ODI and Test squad in shape of Saud Shakeel. He is now backbone of Pakistan’s middle order and a pillar. Great find for Pakistan in ODI World Cup 2023.

Saud Shakeel is a Pakistan National cricketer who plays for the Pakistan National Cricket team as a Middle-order Batsman and Left-arm orthodox bowler. Saud Shakeel also played U 19 cricket world cup for Pakistan in 2014 and also captain the side. Saud Shakeel played with likes of Imam ul haq, Sami Aslam, Zafar Gohar and Kamran Ghulam in U 19 cricket.

He had first come into the spotlight on the Pakistani domestic cricket scene in the 2017–18 season when he was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan Television in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (Pakistan’s premier domestic first-class competition), with 488 runs in 7 matches. He had repeated the feat in the 2018–19 season as well, with 414 runs in 5 matches.

In December 2020, he was shortlisted as one of the ‘Domestic Cricketers of the Year’ for the 2020 PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Awards.

A free-flowing left-hander’s limited overs career has not really taken off. Having made his debut more than two years ago, he had managed to feature in only six ODIs before the World Cup. His selection in the 50-over side itself had come at the back of his impressive form in Test cricket, as a means to fix the middle order woes. But a switch in format necessitated a bit of batting evolution.

Saud Shakeel scored maiden ODI Fifty in ODI World Cup 2023

Saud Shakeel came to bat at No.5 when Pakistan was in difficult situation 38/3 after 10 overs in their first match against Netherlands.

He led Pakistan’s revival with a counter-attacking half-century and a 120-run stand for the fourth wicket with Mohammad Rizwan which set the base for Pakistan’s total of 287.

“I was clear in my mind that I wanted to attack and play positive cricket”,  Shakeel said about his knock.

Saud Shakeel scored 68 runs in 52 balls at a strike rate of 130.77. Saud Shakeel hit 9 fours and 1 six in his innings. So Pakistan stave off the Dutch threat due to good performance of Saud Shakeel.

Due to his valiant innings, Pakistan won the match and Saud Shakeel was declared man of the match.
