An able student, he passed his matriculation with distinction. He wanted to pursue science after that but soon realized that he couldn’t study full-time. He switched to part-time studies and completed a course in commerce. The middle one among three siblings, Usama had underachieved until he was 18, constantly consumed in finding a balance between cricket and academics.
“I started to enjoy leg spin and went on with it. In the streets, I never allowed anyone to score more than two runs in an over. My ball spun sharply to deceive any batsman and I was unplayable. I started to develop control playing in the limited space of the garage, where there was no question of a follow-through. All I could do was roll my arms hard to spin the ball away from my brother’s front foot, and it was very satisfying to deceive him. It’s generally hard to spin the tennis ball with tape on but it worked well for me and when I picked up the cricket ball, it was relatively easy.”

Usama Mir PSL 2016 Career and Stats

Usama Mir was first picked by Karachi Kings in the inaugural edition of the PSL and retained for the second season.
In the 2016 season, the Kings played their first game, and made a mistake of not having a specialist spinner on their side. They rectified this mistake in the next game by selecting Mir.
Usama Mir came in and immediately made his presence felt. He bowled three overs for only 14 runs, and took the wicket of Andre Russell. In the 2016 season, he played 7 games and was largely impressive in each one of them.

Usama Mir 3rd the Highest Wicket taker in PSL 2017

Usama Mir’s 2016 PSL season was impressive, it was his 2017 tournament that caught the headlines. Despite playing fewer games than others, Mir finished as the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament taking 12 wickets in only eight games.
In this season, Mir was the go-to bowler for the Kings in the middle overs, regularly providing the team with match-winning spells. After a match-winning bowling performance against Islamabad United, its captain, Misbahul Haq, in the post-match interview said,
“Usama Mir was the difference.”
To gain such high praise from such a renowned batsman highlights the ability and talent of Mir.
Mir’s performances were steady and impressive throughout the tournament, but it was against Peshawar Zalmi where his career changed, and he rose to fame. Against a rampant Shahid Afridi, Mir was given the task to defend 18 off the final over. It couldn’t have started worse, after being hit for a six, but what showed his character and heart was the way he came back from that, taking Afridi’s wicket and sealing the game for his side.
After Mir’s amazing 2017 season for the Kings, he was retained in the team. I expected him to play every game in the 2018 season; however, he was shockingly left out for the majority of the season.

I found it abysmal the way he was treated. After impressing in his first two PSL seasons, Mir should have been given more opportunities. One argument that could be put forward for his lack of opportunity was that in the 2018 season, Karachi Kings had leg-spinner Afridi in the team, and it was unlikely the team would field two leg-spinners.
However, in the 2019 PSL season, Karachi Kings released Afridi yet Mir didn’t play a single game this season.
PSL is supposedly about ‘nurturing our future talent’, yet the complete opposite is happening in this case. Imagine how Mir’s confidence was affected due to the way he was treated by the Kings’ management.
Usama Mir has played with Karachi Kings from 2016 to 2020 and has played a total of 20 games and has taken 18 wickets with an average of 30.94 and an economy of 8.46.
Next year, in PSL 2021, he remained unpicked as no franchise found any interest in the 25-year-old leg-spinner
